Hi All,

Baby due on the 28th October and am thrilled to be preggers for the first time.

[Not sure if this is the right place to be posting so please point me in the right direction if am doing this wrong.]

I still have quite a way to go but I am already at the stage where I want to start discussing maternity leave with my employers.

I found 3 resources that say paid maternity leave is 26 weeks:

but the actual maternity act as well as the timelines my employer gave me say 18 weeks:

Can anyone who has recently applied for leave confirm which numbers applied to them. I am sure there is going to be a bit of discussion at the office and I want to be prepared.

Thanks!
CJack

Hi there CJ.

Congratsand Welcome to the Baby Forums.:)

26 weeks is correct.;)

It used to be 18 weeks up to a few years ago. Looks like your employers info is out of date.

The Citizens Advice Bureau will also confirm for you.:)

Hi,

All of the posts here also appear on Facebook where we received the following helpful reply from HR Consultant Claire Carroll

Congrats and best wishes! Just to confirm that the statutory maternity leave entitlement is now 26 weeks paid by social welfare, with the option of taking an additional 16 weeks unpaid.

Thanks so much to Carroll and the topic admin! Believe it or not I am the first person at the company to fall pregnant in 11 years and it now makes sense that their facts might be a bit old.

Thanks too for the congrats!

While the question of 'how much paternity leave am I entitled to?' is a relatively simple one, the can of worms it opens is far messier. Undoubtedly there will be chaos ahead, chaos that already thinly stretched companies do not need.

No point in having an entitlement to payment of Maternity Leave if payment of the Maternity Leave cause the small company / employer to go bust?
